Coach Blog Post 6.2.19

Good evening, Sully!

Wow, week one has passed already?! I’d like to thank all of the swimmers, coaches, and parents for helping make Sully feel like home; what a blessing it is to be a part of such an amazing community!

We spent our first week hitting the reset button on our freestyle body positioning, backstroke and breaststroke fundamentals. Even some of our 8&unders started learning breaststroke kick! While we have a long way to go, we still made time to introduce the foundation of dives, flipturns, and open turns for all applicable practice groups and (of course) left time for relays and games on Friday! One of my biggest goals this season is to teach your kids the purpose behind their movements; what slows them down, what reduces drag, and what creates propulsion. I want our kids to swim smart before they swim hard!

Week two will review each of the above strokes but pay special attention to the introduction of butterfly. We’ll hit kicking, underwaters, body position, and of course the fundamentals of the stroke. If you haven’t purchased fins yet, be sure to bring them practice this week! Especially young and novice swimmers!

A few friendly reminders:

1. Goggles are mandatory and a basic necessity for practice. If your child wears glasses, I would highly recommend purchasing a pair of prescription goggles (they’ll thank you later).
2. Swim caps are highly encouraged for athletes with hair long enough to obstruct their vision. If you don’t have a cap, please pull back that hair before getting in!
3. Don’t forget to put on sunscreen and bring a water bottle to practice!
4. Write your name on everything in sharpie! This way we can return lost belongings to their rightful owner :)
